Bug Nelson takes the exact opposite route.
The Brooklyn rapper doesn’t shout to get your attention, and he certainly isn’t interested in putting on a costume. On his new collaborative album with producer Cusho, Combustible Body Armor, Nelson sounds like a guy leaning against the wall at a crowded party, quietly making observations so sharp and absurd you can’t help but lean in to listen.
Nelson’s writing style feels less like traditional rap braggadocio and more like short-story fiction written on the back of receipts. He has an incredible radar for the tiny, strange details of daily life that most of us tune out. But what makes his music stick isn’t just the weirdness—it’s the craftsmanship. Beneath his unbothered, conversational tone is a writer who cares deeply about cadence, internal rhymes, and the exact right moment to hit you with a punchline.
Cusho’s eclectic, organic production gives Nelson’s pen the perfect breathing room. Instead of polished, glossy trap drums, Cusho digs through the crates for warm, dust-caked vinyl loops, jazz-inflected keys, and gritty guitar riffs.
You hear that dynamic immediately on “assorted luggage” (featuring Josh Alias), where a hypnotic loop lets Nelson casually set the tone. Tracks like “WKUK” with Oatmeal Jenkins bring a heavier, head-nodding bounce to the room, while “Ole Larry’s Bones” lets warm percussion and smoky keys drift beneath Nelson’s fluid flow. When the project dips into darker waters on the Cooper-assisted “Lorem ipsum” or gets cinematic on “JUMPSCARE!”, the transition feels seamless. Everything belongs to the same world.
By the time the album hits its driving, guitar-laced finale, “CANNONBALL RICHARDS,” Nelson has made his point without ever raising his voice.
Combustible Body Armor is both entertaining and thought-provoking, while Nelson’s specific sense of humor gives him a footprint all his own. It’s a record that doesn’t demand your attention—it simply earns it by being unapologetically itself.
