SongsWire – The Fox Commentary

Few artists embody the raw meaning of resilience like KBD Meeks. From battling poverty and homelessness to pushing his music by any means necessary, Meeks has proven that pure talent, drive, and relentless determination can break through the barriers most people think are impenetrable. Recently co-signed by Tony DeYoung Entertainment, which is under Roc Nation Distribution, Meeks is stepping into a global spotlight that he earned the hard way—by grinding on the streets, staying true to his message, and refusing to be ignored.

In this exclusive SongsWire Fox Commentary interview, KBD Meeks opens up about his struggles, his hunger for success, and why he believes his story proves that a massive budget isn’t the only way to be heard.

SongsWire: You’ve been open about the struggles you’ve faced with poverty and homelessness. Can you share how those experiences shaped you, not just as a person, but as an artist?

KBD Meeks: Man, the streets raised me. Everything I rap about comes from what I’ve seen and what I’ve lived through. When you don’t know where you’re gonna sleep at night, when you’re hungry but still trying to keep your mind focused—that builds a different kind of strength. Music became my way to cope, but also my way to tell the truth. I want people to feel that hunger in every line, because it’s real. My art wouldn’t be the same if I didn’t go through it.

SongsWire: A lot of artists struggle to get their music heard without a big budget. Yet you’ve managed to catch the attention of Tony DeYoung Entertainment and now Roc Nation Distribution. How did that happen?

KBD Meeks: Honestly? Work ethic. I wasn’t waiting for anybody to give me permission. I pushed my music in front of everybody I could, including Tony DeYoung. Whether he liked it or not, he was gonna know my name. I stayed consistent, stayed hungry, and showed him I wasn’t just another dude making music—I was someone with something to say. That’s why he respected me enough to co-sign me. Now with Roc Nation Distribution behind me, the world’s gonna hear it too.

SongsWire: What does it mean to you to be co-signed by Tony DeYoung Entertainment under Roc Nation Distribution?

KBD Meeks: It means validation for all the work I put in. But it also means responsibility. I didn’t get here because somebody handed me a bag—I got here because I refused to quit. Now that I’m under one of the biggest distribution platforms in the world, I gotta prove that I belong here. This isn’t just a win for me—it’s proof that you can come from nothing, literally the streets, and still get recognized if your grind is strong enough.

SongsWire: You’ve proven that you don’t need a huge budget to make noise. What’s your message to other independent artists who might feel like the odds are stacked against them?

KBD Meeks: Stop waiting for money to validate your dream. I had nothing, and I still made sure my voice was heard. All you need is drive, determination, and consistency. Don’t get me wrong, money helps, but if you ain’t got work ethic, money won’t save you. My story shows that the grind itself is your biggest investment. If you believe in yourself and keep moving, somebody out there is gonna notice.

SongsWire: People are starting to respect not just your music, but your work ethic. What keeps you motivated when everything seems stacked against you?

KBD Meeks: I don’t have a Plan B. Music is my only way out, so failure isn’t an option. Every time I think about quitting, I remember those nights with no bed, no food, and no hope. That pain keeps me moving. And when I see people start respecting the grind, respecting the effort—it pushes me even harder. I want to be living proof that you can beat the odds.

SongsWire: What’s next for KBD Meeks now that you’re officially moving with Roc Nation Distribution?

KBD Meeks: I’m dropping more music, more visuals, and more real-life stories. I want to flood the industry with truth. Now that I’ve got Roc Nation Distribution behind me, my reach is global. But I’m not changing who I am—I’m still that same hungry kid from the streets. I just finally got the platform to tell my story on a bigger stage. This is only the beginning.
