In honor of Brian Eno’s birthday, famous electronic music artist Lawrence Lui is covering “Fractal Zoom” from 1992 as a tribute to the “godfather of ambient music.”
Lui makes the track more dissonant on his version of it, which was on Eno’s 11th solo album, Nerve Net. It came out now to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month and Eno’s 77th trip around the sun.
As ghostly samples float on top of layers of grainy sounds, Lui’s music is filled with a dense atmosphere that makes it feel both open and closed in. The distorted melancholia of Burial mixes with the environmental precision of Japanese ambient star Hiroshi Yoshimura, making something that honors the track’s roots while also breaking new ground.
A press statement says that the release is a sneak peek at Lui’s upcoming album. The cover art, which was done by his teenage son and looks like it came from Peter Saville’s famous Factory Records, adds another layer of generational debate.
